Question /proc/cpuinfo doesn show vmx flag on intel e8500

Hi,

Ive just setup and installed centos (xen kernel) on my new intel e8500 based sytem. As far as i know this processor should support VMX flag? But when I do a "cat /proc/cpuinfo" i get:

Code:
processor : 1
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 23

and uname -a:
Code:
Linux ubuntu 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5xen #1 SMP Tue Dec 16 12:26:32 EST 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
As you would expect xen fails with
Code:
Error: HVM guest support is unavailable: is VT/AMD-V supported by your CPU and enabled in your BIOS?
Im not at the box now so i cant check to see if there is an option to enable/disable vmx in the BIOS but AFAIK the info in /proc/cpuinfo should be independant of these settings(and other things such as kernel?) anyway? The only option that i can remember was something like "lock bit", would this disable support for VMX?

I feel like im making a simple mistake here, I would be most grateful if someone could point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Will.

Intel VT support can be verified by the 'vmx' flag and it is available on your system. But most vendor disables VT in BIOS. To see if it is enabled, check for the 'hvm-xxx' flags in the hypervisor capability set by running the following

Code:
cat /sys/hypervisor/properties/capabilities
To solve your problem reboot the box and go to BIOS and enable VT.

Also, keep in mind some motherboard do not support VT. It is also depends upon your motherboard. Some motherboard needs updated BIOS...

Thumbs up

Thanks for your response, after thoroughly checking the bios setting and not finding anything to do with VT I checked out motherboard bios update page and found the version i was using didn't fully support the wolfdale processor, doh!. A quick bios update later I was sorted.

Thanks for the help!

Cheers,

Will.
