Thread: I have a lot of process in my server

Hi guys!

I have a linux environment whith an Apache Tomcat 5.5.

Normally I see 20 process of httpd in my server but some time I see 200 (ps -ef | grep httpd | wc -l) and my Apache crash.

What's happens??? In which site I can see the origin of the problem?

I use the command "lsof -p PID" but I don't see anything. Any ideas?

Too many process means lots of visitors or someone is attacking your server. Try

See apache and tomcat log files and you will get lots of information.

Run netstat and find out what kind of connections are made to your box.

Did you harden Apache and Linux server?

I don't see any extranly acces in access_log.
So, I think that's any plugin (*.jar) that make some connections (it it possible to create any bucle?)

Okay let us start with basic tools. run uptime and not down load average. Next, run netstat -nat and see total connections. Run iostat and see disk i/o stats. This three tools will give you an idea about bottlenecks.
