Default lighttpd as reverse-proxy with authentication

Hi-

I have a web site myexample.com and a web service at service.myexample.com. The web service consists of a bunch of web servers listening on different ports on the same ip. I would like to use lighttpd for reverse proxying + authentication for the web service. That is, when an HTTP request comes in to service.example.com I want lighttpd to authenticate the request (basic is fine for now) and then pass it off to one of the ports where the service web servers are listening. I'm sure this is possible with some combination of mod_proxy and mod_auth but I can't seem to figure out how to do it. All the examples I have found for authentication seem to be about protecting content (i.e. folders) and not about authenticating the request. Am I missing something simple? Could someone help me out?

thanks

grifter

I think this is done at application level. For example api.example.com can only accessed if user/password or api key is correct. You can use any scripting language such as PHP or Python. Some app server such as Zope has such stuff build into it.
