I'm just a newbieand I have installed VMware on my machine to see if my systems is compatible ..my question how do i get to the desktop Gui from my command prompt

It should start automatically. Did you installed server version? Did you installed Ubuntu without Gnome desktop? Also, you need to add service:
Code:sudo service gdm start

I Installed ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386 on Vmware 8.0 but I think Vmware maybe not be compatible I get to the logon process I enter my user ID and passwrd but i cant logon to the desktop Gui/ When do that command its unrecognized service

Can you attach screenshot of your login box and error that you get when you type the userID and password?
