Thread: Assistance on setting up NAS device on a Debian firewall

Hi,

I am totally new in Linux and I would like to ask your assistance on how to setup a NAS device behind a Debian firewall.

Goal: Connect a NAS server on the internal network of a Linux firewall.

Here is the setup:

internet -- Linux firewall -- Dell 10/100 Switch -- NAS server

Linux is running on Debian GNU/Linux 4.0
NAS PowerVault NX300 is running on QNAP 3.3.6 Build 1110T

Do you want to share files on the Internet too? If not than just allow access from and within LAN. For example if NAS server (IP 192.168.1.100) and internal lan is part of 192.168.1.0/24:

Allow in/out all from 192.168.1.0/24 to 192.168.1.100

The iptables rules will look as follows on firewall:

/sbin/iptables -A INPUT -s 192.168.1.0/24 -p all -d 192.168.1. 100 -m state --state NEW  -j ACCEPT

If you could post your firewall script it will help us to suggest you exact rules.

Yes, this should only be allowed within LAN as the NAS will be accessed via VPN.

If I understood this correctly, the only config needed on the firewall is to add the rule to allow access from and within LAN. I am guessing that since VPN allows entire LAN access to the client, I do not need to add another rule anymore, is that correct?
