Help! I recently replaced my monitor and am now getting a "sync out of range" error. I have Ubuntu 7.10 and can't seem to get into the system to change the resolution which I understand is what is needed. Any suggestions?

This problem is quite common in windows.. we have to reset the resolution to the acceptable limit..
to do this we have to X11 config file

also sometimes you can do ctrl alt + or - to raise or lower your res.
the problem continues. I have tried "X11 config file" and "ctrl+or" to no avail. For some reason my computer will not recognize my password. When we get to that point the cursor won't move and when I press enter it tells me that I have entered an incorrect name or password, and so I cannot even enter the computer to give orders. I freely admit that I am a novice and need help. I have emailed the guy who programmed and sold me the computer asking for guidance but if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate hearing from you.
sincerely,
Peter Maxwell
