Default Linux Desktop and Linux networking

hi,

I am in Java development, Right now I am using Linux @server End and Windows @Desktop End. Now i want to use Linux @Desktop End. ( i.e I want to shift from Windows network to Linux network ( File server, LDAP authentication etc ...)
Now Let me know what precautions I have to take On Linux Desktop. (As On Windows Desktop we have to take Windows Updates regularly as well as Updation of Antivirus regularly.)

Also which is the best Linux desktop OS ( Ubuntu/ Fedora etc....)

Regards,
Raju

Both Fedora and Ubuntu are excellent choice.

Both includes auto update over the Internet. There is no need to install anti virus. However, you can try free GPLd anti virus such as Clam AntiVirus

one more tip..
the more unwanted applications u select the more vulnerability u have to carry.
so be precise while selecting the applications and tune the services..
