I have two intel d865gbf computers, neither have a video card using the on board graphics. On the server computer I wanted to do a fresh install so I downloaded the desktop iso and did the install. The screen was a mess after the install and I had to reinstall using failsafe graphics mode. That went fine. On my main computer I want to do an upgrade to 8.10 but I don't know how to accomplish that in failsafe graphics mode. I have spent a lot of time getting this system setup and do not want to risk losing everything on my main computer setup. Can anyone tell me how I should proceed?

You can always start installation in text mode using Ubuntu alternative install CD. It has text mode option.
Do you have unsupported PCIe graphics card?

thanks for the quick answer to my problem. No I am not running a graphics card, I am using the on board graphics, the 865g chipset with the extreme graphics contoller. I went and download the alternative Ubuntu 8.10 iso. I can see where you can install in safe graphics mode but I do not see how you can do a upgrade using that disk. I don't want to lose all my installed programs and configurations. There has to be a lot of computers out there running Intel on board graphics. I can't be the only one with this problem. Maybe just the only one too dumb to find a solution.

You've two options. Perform direct upgrade using the Internet. This will upgrade all installed program and it will take 30-40 mintues for high speed A/DSL | cable internet. This is explained in following urls:
Ubuntu 8.10 Upgrade Server specific upgrade - Upgrade Ubuntu Hardy Heron Server 8.04 To Ubuntu Server 8.10 Intrepid Ibex Upgrading Using the Alternate CD/DVD You've Downloaded Use this method if the system being upgraded is not connected to the Internet.
Code:
gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade" Code:
kdesudo "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade" Taken from Upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10 | Ubuntu Hope this helps!
