You can try it no problem. And it comes with KDE or other desktops. You need to download them from www.sun.com download center.
Hardware support is not as extensive as Linux or BSD has. But it will be fun experience try out |

Java enterprise server required only if you have java applications. Basic java is included with Solaris 10 i.e. compiler and other stuff.
GUI has nothing to do with Java enterprise server. Your CDE desktop depends upon your Graphics card, driver and monitor. What card you have? Did your card get recognized by Solaris? Lemme know.. Difference between Solaris and Linux, both are now free. Here is link http://sunflash.sun.com/articles/83/...sysadmin/14025 |

May be this help http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html
Visit http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/ to see if your h/w listed here or not. Also you need to update BIOS so that it works I have installed it using http://www.tools.de/solaris/xf86/ this url. You need XFree86 porting toolkit it almost supports all of your driver. |
