If you are setting root password first time, use mysqladmin
    Code:
    mysqladmin -u root password NEWPASSWORD
If you are looking to update or change root password (you know old root password and there is old root mysql password exists) , use

    Code:
mysqladmin -u root -p password NEWPASSWORD
Note the difference between two command -p option is used.
