Thread: Saying typed words

I have installed festival and want to create a script (key logger) which I can run in one virtual window while I am creating a script with vi in another.
The idea is to simultaneously store the characters typed until a space is entered at which point the word would be said.
The question is is there a way to capture a keystroke with script that won't interfere with what I would be editing in vi? Do you have any suggestions? I tried fiddling with stty but my key capture (without an enter) did not work.

Allow a restatement.
I want to write a script (key logger) to run in the background or in another virtual window. When it sees a space after a word it would use festival tts to say the word. This would likely check spelling due to bad pronunciation.
It would effectively spy on other foreground programs or other x-windows.
My initial thought was to use the stty to read key presses but when I tried it (the function I used before) it did not see any key presses in another window.
