Default set shell variable uses which file in RHEL5.1??

hi all,
Generally when we type set command we can see all the shell variables that are present but which file holds all these variables??

Default

User specific settings should go in either $HOME/.bash_profile or $HOME/.bashrc.

System specific setting must go in /etc/profile

Any file which is a parent of the current shell, or which is sourced on shell invocation, or which has been sourced since, could have set them.
