My client is running Squid for DNS caching, Version 2.5.STABLE9 on Debian (Sarge) for a large population of users. Obviously there is always the ongoing complaint that performance isn't good enough.
1) What is the best method in testing a squid installation's performance? 2) I have noted that Squid v.3.0 is available, as well as alternate solutions such as vicompress which appears to provide similar functionality - Would a newer version provide better performance or is it more apt to provide bugfixes, better security or added features? 3) Does squid support an upgrade path or would it be best to install it fresh as a second installation on the same server, or on an alternate server? Thanks. B. |

Squid is web caching software and not DNS caching. For dns caching you need to use software such as bind's cache or tiny dns cache etc. See how to setup caching dns:
How To Set Caching DNS Server You need to use software called web polygraph for benchmark caching proxy server: Benchmarking squid and other caching proxy servers
