I am connected to a server which provides internet connectivity.
I have installed rhel 5 on my machine. I have installed bind rpms on my machine, I have not configured it. my /etc/resolv.conf is empty. No zone is defined in /var/named/chroot/var/named.conmf. Then also, when I start named service, my machine can resolve any outside ip address or name. eg. hjost yahoo.com gives yahoo's ip and vice versa. Why this is happening ? I am able to access any internet site without setting proxy port in my browser. when named is stopped, this does not happen. pls. guide me. |

You must have enabled DHCP to obtain all the information. BIND is used as dns name server i.e. it serves zone data. For name resolution you only need to configure /etc/resolv.conf file using static or dhcp mode.

that is the problem with me. i have not entered anything in my resolv.conf file. then , how my machine is producing the right ip for yahoo.com by host command ? and also vice versa.
the server providing internet acces to us has following ports open as shown by nmap command. 22,23,25,53,80,110,113,139,143,389,443,515,548,312 8,980,981. is that due to masquerading on the server ? |
