Welcome to forum!

Ubuntu 4.10 is old version, following instructions are tested on 6.10 and 7.04 version only, but you can try out. Open X terminal or shell prompt:
Code:
cd /tmp
wget wget ftp://ftp.cac.washington.edu/pine/pine_4.64_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i pine_4.64_i386.deb
If there is any error after last command just type:
Code:
sudo apt-get -f install

To start pine, type
Code:
pine
Now you will see a menu, use up and down arrow key to move. To select a menu hit enter key.

Select Setup from menu and select Config option (press C). Now setup smtp sever/pop3 server and other stuff. Save the changes. You should see option at the bottom of screen. Once done restart pine and start sending or receiving mails.
