Are there any advantages/disadvantages to keeping mail in the deferred queue? I know that the mail isn't permanently stuck in the deferred forever, and will eventually be released to the active queue, but what are the percentages?

I just don't want to delete mail, if there's a good chance it's eventually going to get out.

Also, is it possible to write a cron job to clear the deferred mail every 5-10 minutes?

There are huge number of reasons why a mail could be deferred, which could include temporary network problems, greylisting etc. Most MTA's will have their own logic of handling deferred messages. It's generally prudent to leave it to the MTA, unless ofcourse you have some very specific requirements.
