You need to boot from Ubuntu CD in rescue mode : - Boot Ubuntu Linux into Rescue mode to fix system

From there you can reinstall GRUB

I got these options:
Start or install Ubuntu
Start ubuntu in safe graphics mode
Install with driver update CD
Check cd for Defects
Memory Test
Boot from first hard disk

And I hit the esc button. it gives me the text based boot options. and I enter the following parameter
rescue acpi=off

It says kernel didn't find rescue images. I tried from 6.06 and 7.04 cd's. Looking for solution.
