Default Problem changing expired passwords via ssh session

My users can change the password if they login via console but not via ssh? My session ends up with following error

Your password has expired, the session cannot proceed.
Connection to ras2.somwhere.co.uk closed.

Any idea how do I allows users with expired passwords change their passwords via SSH?

Upgrade your OpenSSH server; this is know BUG. If you don’t want to upgrade disable UsePrivilegeSeparation option in /etc/ssh/sshd_config file and reload sshd server.

I recommend upgrading as old version has some serious security bugs.
