while booting the redhat as4.0 i am getting press ctrl-d for matinance or give root password. what might be the problem

Dear Ramjimh.
You have to specify very precisely. There are so many possibilities of crasing.
what error u are getting.

ramjimh, put root password and run fsck command on root system:

Also pay attention to screen for error message.

Also don't use subject like rhel 4.0 (try something like Redhat linux Problem while booting system). no one get idea what is your problem. Try to put meaningful subject it attract other people attention on forum and you will get better result next.
