fake password login?

fake password login?
is this possible? if yes then how?
a friend of mine told me that their is a senerio using which... step. 1.. we don't know the password of the super user i.e root. step. 2 .. but when we are going to login with the superuser account with the unknown password.....we get through. though this is not somthing professional but is this possible? and how can v do this.
