Default

IP forwarding required when you need Linux act as
  • Linux router/gateway, DMZ, security configuration
  • Dial up server / ppptp, vpn and much more for LAN
  • Internet connection sharing

See following articles on how to enable ip forwarding for sharing internet connection or DMZ setups:
  1. CentOS / Redhat Linux Internet Connection Sharing
  2. Linux Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) Ethernet Interface Requirements and Configuration

Simply, Port forwarding is to forward your LAN network application onto internet. Like,if you have your web server inside LAN & you want to make it visible for public on the internet, then you can use port forwarding facility.

In linux, "iptables" is a very good tool to enable port forwarding.

The Main concept behing port forwridng is NAT. ( Network Address Translation )

Thanks,
Nishith Vyas.
