RHEL ES4 wont login
I cannot login to the local machine (console) in runlevel 3 with any user or root accounts, the prompt just displays login incorrect and clears the screen but I can login to any user or root through SSH (putty) just fine. When trying with invalid credentials, it doesn't clear the screen. Any ideas???

Boot to the rescue CD, mount the RHEL 4 installation (meaning the drive or partition it's installed on) somewhere, chroot to that directory, then do passwd root. Reboot to the hard drive and see if that works.
