Thumbs up Another Novice!

Hi nixCraft!

This is the biggest selection of the various directions of Open Source that I have seen so far: BSD, Solaris and the more usual Nux's. I am a Novice using mainly Ubuntu 7.04, but I am slowly trying to venture out into other Distro's: It's early days so I'm just dipping my toes in really.

I look forward to joining in where I can!

Hi jerry!

I did tell Ubuntu's parents about me seeing her, they just told me I had a lot to learn before I got to their level.
Ubuntu does appear to be some mainstream publicity competition for M$ at the moment, but I think the best is yet to come?

Thanks for the welcome!!

LOL good one. I agree with you. Ubuntu needs to add many more features and best is yet to come. However recent Dell move will push Ubuntu to next level.

Linux is all about choice and freedom. There are different Linux distribution exists with different goals. Look for good community support, and package and h/w support. As usual try out different distributions and select the best Linux for you. I also recommending reading comments posted by some of our reader below:

Hey nixcraft!

This is great, I like the idea of the lists of guaranteed hardware: I am a member at a few Linux forums, but this is the first time I have seen a direct involvement with Hardware pages? This is a really good idea. I appear to be trying things with hardware, see below:

My main machine (First self-build 5 months ago).
Athlon 3200+ AM2, 7600GS, 1G/533/DDR2, ASUS MSNPV-VM M/b

My old machine (Built by friend, a trusty Win98SE machine).
Athlon 1200 462, TNT2, 256/PC133, Jetway 830 CF M/b

My £4.00 Sterling machine (Acquired for the said price in a Jumble Sale).
Celeron 533 370, Intel VGA, 128/PC100, M6TWC M/b ( ? still need to look at thi.

My test-rig (Just assembled from bits due to the emigration of a neighbor).
Athlon 900 462, 3Dfx Voodoo, 128/266/DDR, SV266A M/b(? Still need to look at thi.

I am still very much learning about builds and OS installations and I have yet to focus on any kind of direction in the OSS and FOSS World: Hence looking at various places on the net (I Got my first network connection in Dec 2006 at 44 years old!) and paying £4 for computers! What a bargain!!

Perhaps I can start an Ed-j factory outlet!

Hey sweta!

I did manage to do an installation of BSD a couple of weeks ago, but no, I started by a first installation of Breezy in November last year, and I appear to have been doing installations ever since: As well as trying to learn to use the Internet and forums.

I may try it again at some time. Are you using BSD?

Good computer and rock bottom price. You can use this computer for various things such as router or streaming etc.

There are many things you can do provided that you have a time. You can work with community or you can just kick out buggy m$ and move to OSS & FOSS to get rid of stupid DRM and viruses shit. Make your computer personal again

Why not? One of my friends does the same thing. He was working at pizza parlor. Learned the Linux skills and now sells Linux and provides training. He makes some good money out of his hobby.
