Thread: Is Perl really worth to learn?

    I'm still learning shell scripting, what do you recommend perl or python?

    I learnt both, because i know i will need that knowledge in different situations and environment. If you are working for a company that uses Perl, then you need to learn Perl. If the situation arise that you need to use Python, then you have to learn Python. so learn both, you will need someday

    Well I just checked with my friend who is our main sys admin and network admin. We do use Perl, so I am going to use the Perl first and than Python too

    I never bothered with bash or sh scripting to much, I randomly picked a scripting language (perl) and never looked back. My friend did the same but picked up python. I wish I had learned python, perl isn't very friendly and leads to bad habits of sloppy code. I now program in C mostly (even for mondaine tasks such as an alarm clock) and I won't bother learning python now. I figure I might as well learn a compilable language so I can eventually sell some of my programs.
