Hi,
Root is the superuser on a Unix/Linux system. All you have to do is login as root using su or run command using sudo.
root, is the term used for the special user account that is controlled by the system administrator
It is never good practice for anyone to use root as their normal user account, because simple typographical errors can cause major damage to the system. It is recommended to create a normal user account instead and then use the su command to switch when necessary. Some use the sudo utility instead, which allows a measure of graduated access.
Let me know if you need any further help.

thanks for your help
Jumping in here, I have a couple of minor problems.
In normal users (mike) desktop, I placed a few shortcuts, and my email is one, which works fine, but indicated by the padlock symbol that the owner is root, I checked in properties. Just do not know how that happened, and can I change it back to mike, I also I have a sane file, unfortunately I cannot use, (another story), I think I know how it got onto my desktop, (mike not root).
How can user mike deal with it, I don't mean run it . Or what is the way in command to do this.

I'm not sure I got your question but one can set permission on files using chown and chmod command. So if you want to change back permission to mike login as root and run command:
Code:chown mike:mike filename

I have never turned back in my life ; I shall not do so today.. haha
Yup,
That did it, gotta walk before I run.
Thanks

One dumb thing I saw once at a new customer's site, was:
They created a new user called Admin, and they gave it full permissions just like root, then they disabled the root user !!!
Isn't this dUmB ???![]()
