I patched my RHEL 5.8 using yum update and then followed by updating vmware tools on my Virtual machine ( hosted on Vpshere), This is Oracle Database server.

After this when i rebooted - I saw may failed in the console.....with read only filesystem...........cat /etc/fstab was empty.......i went to single user mode and rewrite the /etc/fstab file ( same as another server) and server came up

What i am looking here::

Now, What are the things i should look for to find the cause, which caused /etc/fstab empty ( During my patching process i never touched this file anytime).....what are the logs which i can look to find the cause...

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but I'm not sure how I would search for this. I have a specific application running on a super old Fedora 7 Moonshine box. This box cannot be upgraded or updated as previous attempts in a dev/test capacity have shown it will render the application unusable. Plans are being made to rewrite the application so it can be brought into this millennium. Being new to Linux I've been tasked with backing up the server and need to install ncftp as well as gnutar to get the system and mysql backed up over FTP. I absolutely cannot have the OS or mysql or anything accidentally updated to newer revisions as this will corrupt everything.

So my question is, if I run:
yum install ncftp and yum install gnutar

...won't the yum installer look for the latest versions of the ncftp and gnutar programs, install all updates and everything before installing the application?

I don't know how to compile anything myself, so what should/can I do here?

Hello All,

I am a telecommunications engineer who has run into a network trouble when using a communications system simulator on CentOS.

Details of my CentOS server:

The simulator runs on CentOS 5.5 on VMware. I've setup 2 NICs -

- eth0 (public) with IP address 148.147.134.XXX and gateway 148.147.134.1. This is connected to my corporate LAN.

- eth 1 (private) with IP address 10.30.30.2.

eth1 has 8000 aliases - eth1:1 to eth1:8000 with IP addresses 10.30.31.1 to 10.30.62.64 respectively.

Each of the eth1 aliases will emulate a virtual phone and are required to register/communicate with a Communications Server which is 148.147.143.XXX. This communication will be over a corporate LAN.

- NOTE: The corporate LAN (148.147.XXX.XXX) does not have a route to 10.30.XXX.XXX and this cannot be done owing to network policies and security.
- NOTE: No configuration changes are possible on the Communications Server (148.147.143.xxx).

<a href="http://nixcraft.com/attachments/centos-rhel-fedora/380d1367250622-how-route-eth1-eth1-aliases-via-eth0-mynetwork.jpg" title="Name: MyNetwork.JPG

My current routing table -

IP Forwarding is enabled (net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 under /etc/sysctl.conf)

Problem:
I am unable to establish two way routing between the virtual phones /eth1 aliases (10.30.31.XXX - 10.30.62.XXX) and the communication server (148.147.143.XXX).

Is it possible to get this working by using IP forwarding and iptables/NAT or any other configuration on the CentOS server? Please remember, I cannot make any changes to the 148.147.XXX.XXX network or the communication server.

If you see a solution, can you please help me with the commands?

Thank you
