Default Mysql pthreads vs non-pthreads

I installed a mysql rpm downloaded from their site. It defaults to pthreads. Mysql runs on one core.
I compiled a mysql tarball downloaded from their site without the --with-pthreads option. Mysql runs on all cores.

Is there a reason pthreads are enabled by default? I can't imagine it's more efficient this way.
