I ran Fedora 2.6 several years ago, it was a good learning tool. I removed it and have been following the Fedora 7 project, via my email.
Now I am just about ready to download a dvd iso file, but first I am trying to resolve a problem. How on earth do I get Linux (whatever shell) to connect to the net. I have tried Mandriva, using DHCP also manual, and Ubuntu likewise, these two systems were at hand for me that's why I used them as research tool. The glaring problem is dsl connection to the net.
I might add that I obtained all the info I think I need from IPCONFIG, my Provider (DNS,Domain name), and from the DHCP from within the modem),
have I overlooked something. I just have to resolve this issue.

Do you have router or usb adsl modem? If it is a router just setup new routing path using route command or GUI tool and reboot the system.
Click on System > Administration > Network

Select connection > Properties > Set IP / subnet / gateway > Save changes

Click on DNS tab > Add / setup ISP dns server
Save the change and reboot the system

I think have done this before, but will do it again. My modem is a SpeedStream 4200.I have settled on ubuntu until I have resolved this issue at least.
I ran sudo pppoe conf. It told me my network provider was not found (Access Concentrator....), and suggested that I check my cables.
I have always suspected that there is something wrong to do with the DNS, as I can ping my ip address but not the DNS.
I also think SpeedStream 4200 are a problem in Linex.

I indeed have already been down the path you suggested. But I went to network setup again.
And entered the connection detail as shown on the thumbnail all o.k.
But on the DNS setup, on the top line is 10.1.1.1, but the ISP DNS is 211.29.132.12 + secondary domain of course, there is no way it will hold those addresses, I can enter them but as soon as I go to say connections and back, I have 10.1.1.1, if I delete 10.1.1.1 and add the ISP DNS,
guess what, 10.1.1.1.(server DNS) returns. My modem is a SpeedStream 4200, on Ethernet.

I installed Fedora 7, and I was on the NET straightway, thus it appears there is an issue to be resolved regarding Ubuntu, and Mandriva. The latter did not appear to be as stable as Ubuntu , and Fedora 7, generally speaking.

Yup that is the beauty of using Linux. If particular thing doesn’t work switch to other distro. Generally Ubuntu works great with Laptop.
