Thread: 3D accelerated graphics is not available

Hi all ,

First off i'm new-ish to linux in general but very new to RHEL. I started working for a company lets call them MBI ... and was given my choice of OS , since their servers are all RHEL i chose this as my distro to familiarise myself with it.

My problem is when I try to make the GUI more appealing with fancy effects I get the problem " Accelerated 3D graphics is not available" .
When i go into the system preferences i notice that there is an ATI Catalyst control center however

It's a nVidia card that i'm using. I've tried to download the drivers for that which require me to turn off X server and install it in init 3 but also to no avail.

As i said I'm new to most of this but if you could advise me on what to do next or if you need me to type more commands for further help please just ask .

I recently got the nvidia driver working for a Z400 card on RHEL 5, there was a number of steps to get the thing working - not sure if this will help you but it may give you a few pointers:

from my notes I did:

#yum install kernal-devel
#rpm -Uvh nvidia-260.19.44.1_sp52395.x86_64.rpm
#system-config-display

#nvidia-settings

#nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visulas-d24

Have fun.

PS: Find and check the nvidia-installer.log for any errors/info.

A short while ago I was running Fedora Core 14, I had managed to load some proprietry drivers to power the super nVidia card that resides in this box, an update basically killed the installation, it all appeared to be due to hard drive failure given the error messages, nearly had heart attack until I read on some obscure webbie that a chap had a similar error and all due to nVidia drivers, I managed to roll it back and it all started to work again.

I have now updated to 15 and am not getting so clever this time.
