Default Broadcom BCM4312 Wireless Driver

I am trying to enable wireless on my HP dv6809us laptop with CentOS 5.4 and am having a hard time. First thing I found was 802.11 Linux STA driver from broadcom website. It fails at the second step in the instructions where I have to 'make'. I installed the kernel-devel and kernel-headers and still it doesn't work.

The broadcom website says:

ISSUES FIXED AND WHAT'S NEW IN THIS RELEASE
-------------------------------------------
+ Supports Linux kernel 2.6.29, 2.6.30.1, 2.6.31
+ Supports hidden networks
+ Supports rfkill in kernels < 2.6.31

Does that mean kernel 2.6.18(which comes with CentOS 5.4) is not compatible? Could someone suggest me how to resolve this? I was running Ubuntu 9.10 before this and had no problem. My last resort is to change the wireless card to Linksys.

Thanks much.

I get the above error while doing this:

2. Build the driver as a Linux loadable kernel module (LKM):

# make clean (optional)
# make

When the build completes, it will produce a wl.ko file in the top level
directory.
