Default Problem with chmod 777 -R / *

Hi All...

I am using Linux system with kernel 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6, for past 4 months.

I normally use user login as well as root login regularly.
Because of this I faced the file access permissions problem for the files
which I created as root, when I logged in user login.

To get rid of this problem I ran the following command as root.

chmod 777 -R / *

while this command was executing I got the output saying permission denied
for some files to change access mode. At that time I didn't pay much attention to these errors.

The next day when I tried to log on to my system ,while booting

I got a message informing that permissions to some files like
rsa_host_key and some other files(I could not remember those file names exactly)
are dangerous.

Then I saw another message stating that "the permissions for ".dmrc" file in home folder must be 644 "

After entering my login details several message windows were opened informing that
some GNOME applications were unable run .

after closing the message windows I got my desktop without Panels and Wallpaper.
When I tried with Right Mouse Button to set wallpaper it did not work.

Then I have changed the permission of ".dmrc" file in home folder using properties window.

Then I Restarted my system and logged in as "root",here also i faced the same problems

I want your suggestion to get back my system to its previous configuration.

Thanks
