Go to /usr/ports/multimedia to see list of mp3 players and other multimedia player. If I were you I will select following
  1. vlc player for CD / DVD playback
  2. xmms - X Multimedia System. XMMS is a multimedia player based on the look of Winamp. Currently it plays mpeg layer 1/2/3, wav, au, CD audio, etc
  3. mplayer can act as both mp3 and dvd playback including TV

To install use pkg_add command or ports collection. For example to install xmms using ports collection enter:
Code:
cd /usr/ports/multimedia
make install clean

I have been using mpg321 on FreeBSD for a long time to play as a music server. works nicely on most mp3 formats. It's available from the FreeBSD ports.

You don't have ports collection installed. How did you installed FreeBSD? From CD / DVD? If so, run sysinstall and select package and insert CD to install it from CD. You can also install ports collection from cd. Do you have internet enabled under FreeBSD?
