Default few quick perl questions

Hello everyone

I'm suppose to use Perl under FreeBSD in few weeks ...

1) What is Perl? and Where I should look for more information, books etc
2) How do I edit a Perl file?

I'm new to UNIX

Also get good book on Unix i.e. FreeBSD
