Well, what actually happened is that I didn't use my computer for one month. When I turned it on after this time it suffered major hardware failure and now has a different motherboard and graphics card. Ever since then, LTSP has failed to work. There have been the usual Ubuntu updates added since it last worked, but I did a clean install of hardy without updates and it still didn't work. I even tried it in Intrepid Ibex, still didn't work and I have returned to Hardy because it is just faster and more reliable. The login is successful, the username and password is accepted but, but the x session never loads. I have cruised various forums and can't find references to the same thing happening.
