I would recommend Ubuntu. The have some an awesome Wiki an how to do just about everything.....

My progression was Redhat(before fedora days)->Suse->Ubuntu 6.06-Present....

You can download the Ubuntu install CD and take it for a test run on any machine without wiping your old OS, which is nice. I believe the option is Try Ubuntu' or something. Like Knoppix, Ubuntu is a live CD.
